Step by step

What happens, and when

  1. Weeks 6 - 10

    Your booking visit

We confirm and date your pregnancy, take your history and run your booking tests: blood group, haemoglobin, sickling, HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis and urine. You meet your named midwife.

  2. Weeks 11 - 14

    First scan and settling in

A dating scan to check your baby's heartbeat and due date. We talk about nausea, tiredness, safe work and travel, and the vitamins that matter now.

  3. Weeks 18 - 22

    Your detailed scan

A careful look at your baby's growth and organs. We also go through malaria prevention and make sure you are sleeping under a treated net.

  4. Weeks 24 - 28

    Checking you both

Your sugar test, a repeat blood count and blood pressure checks. Saturday antenatal classes begin, and partners are warmly welcome.

  5. Weeks 32 - 36

    Planning your birth

We write your birth plan together, check your baby's position, and show you around our birth suite. This is the time to pack your bag.

  6. Week 37 onwards

    Ready to meet your baby

Weekly visits, the signs of labour, and exactly when to call. Your on-call midwife's number is saved in your phone before you leave.
